CANADA'S COLLAGE: HOMEWORK FOR 6TH GRADE

Work on Canada's collage tonight and every day until it is due next week.  Over the weekend, start gathering the materials you will need for your collage.  If you are unable to provide your own poster board, ask me on Monday for one of those big blue sheets.

Remember: (1)  The helpful information handout you obtained today will make things a whole lot easier.  Complete them by scavenging your textbook. We finished most of the questions on that handout in class today.  Work on the rest of the questions in class tomorrow.

(2) The collage deadline has been postponed to next Wednesday, February 4th.

(3) Collect all your materials at home and at school.  You will have class time on Monday to start assembling your collage.

(4)  If there are any questions or concerns, or if you need more information that is not in your textbook, you can use the CIA website.  Otherwise, bring your questions and/or concerns to class on Monday, 2/2/09.

(5) You have been getting class time to work on the collage.  Do not wait until Tuesday night to start gathering information or to begin putting your collage together.  It cannot be done in one day, let alone one night.   

If you prefer to do all the aspects of your collage at home (and to avoid the substitute teacher leaving your name for me for class disruption), bring a novel to read in class tomorrow.

Balancing the Budget; Unitary, Confederate, and Federal Governments

Sixth Grade: Homework for those who did not turn in their newspaper articles featuring them as the president of their country, you have homework tonight:

As the president, one of your most important duties is to balance the budget of your country.  Go to the website above and do that now.  First, read the entire directions on what to do.

Visit the link above and follow the directions.  Read every page thoroughly in order to complete the work.  As you saw in class today, if you do not balance the budget (if the circle graph does not equal 100%), the program will not allow you to move forward.  Once you have balanced the budget, you will recceive a congratulatory message and a button that will allow you to move on to the next page.

Select your top three advisors and write correct and complete reasons you chose those three candidates as your top aides.  Spelling, punctuation, and grammar will be checked for accuracy. 

Print the newspaper page as your evidence that you completed the assignment.  If your printer is out of service, either save your newspaper article on your flash and bring in to class tomorrow to print, or copy and paste it into Microsoft Word, save it, and attach it to me in an e-mail document.

Sixth and Seventh Grades: Start planning the product you will use in proving that you undersand the differences among these concepts: unitary, confederate, and federal methods of power distribution by governments.  Class time will be given tomorrow, and the assignment is due on Monday (1/26/09).  

Suggestion: As we discussesd in class, you were advised to choose something that is relatively easy, a product from the list  you went over in class, a product you can complete by yourself in order to avoid relying on somone else who might disappoint you over the weekend.

Presidential and Parliamentary Democratic Government; Survey

Classwork: 1.  Define these six government-related words using prior knowledge and/or a dictionary: Inauguration, speech, democracy, president, parliament, and constitution.  If you are using the dictionary, choose the definition that is related to social studies and put the meaning in your own words.

2.  Compare and contrast presidential and parliamentary democratic forms of government.  Use information from previous class activities as a stepping stone.  Read the attached document, and add it to your wealth of knowledge on these two forms of democratic government. 

Create your own Venn diagram, square diagram, or oval diagram.  If using any of the diagrams, give five facts in each category for a total of 15 (fifteen).  If using a two-column chart, still give 15 (fifteen) items on how these two forms of government are similar and different.

Homework: Students, if you did not finish these two assignments in class, they are now homework assignments.  They will be collected as soon as you enter the classroom tomorrow.

Published Report Due Tomorrow

Seems like such a long journey from the morning of our report up until now--the sunset! It has been one shaky, uncertain journey, but we made it through pre-writing, drafting, editing, revising, and (confidently, here we are) publishing!

 

Homework: The published copy of your report on your African country or Canadian province/territory is due tomorrow at the beginning of class.

Editing, Revising, and Adding More Details

 We are working on the report on our chosen country or province: Africa or Canada.  The report is due on Wednesday, 1/14/09.
