OIL, OIL, OIL! (OPEC) AND EU: TODAY'S ACTIVITIES

Seventh Grade:Download your circle graph here and use the handout to complete the assignment.  If you have a legal size printing paper, everything should fit on two sheets.  Otherwise, you may have to print each circle on a separate sheet of paper.Download circle_graphsoil_and_its_importance.doc

1.  List the OPEC member countries as an acronym in an acrostic-poem format.  Go to this website and scroll to the bottom for the list of OPEC members.  http://www.eia.doe.gov/ipm/appa.html#OECD

2.  Recreate the two circle graphs on the front of your circle handouts.  Make sure to label each circle graph with the title that is given above each one.  Write each title on the line given underneath each circle on your handout.  http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Persian_Gulf/pdf.pdf

3.  You will receive more information to help you complete the other two circle graphs on Monday.  The two circle graphs will be your homework on Monday.

Literacy Rates and Standards of Living (Homework)

All classes: Complete the remaining parts of the literacy rate/standard of living handout for your region.  See the links below for each of the topics.  (If you have lost your handout, download one below.)

The Wikipedia website is easier to access because it lists the literacy rates right there on the pages, but you may want to use the CIA information as the more reliable of the two sources.  Use the CIA website for all other information.

CIA Website: Enter each country's name; Click on "People" among the options given on the right.  Scroll to "People" and locate the literacy rate of each country (as a percent) and death rate per 1000 live births.

Use your textbook and the page numbers given on the chart to locate the number of cars per 1000 people per country.  Write your findings in the correct space provided on the chart. Complete the bottom part of the handout.  What is your conclusion regarding literacy rate and standard of living.  Does one affect the other?

Scroll to yesterday's entry for the homework assignment.  Those who did most of the assignments yesterday received extra credit from me.  However, before I collect your work, I wanted to give you a chance to check yourself first by making sure that all the coordinates are written in the correct order (longitude, latitude) and are written with the correct accompanying information: degrees and cardinal directions. 

Homework: Weird Shapes of Countries

Homework for Periods 1, 2, and 6:

Locate the following information for your three-column chart on countries and their unique/weird shapes.  Some of you borrowed Atlases from me.  Those who have Internet access, you can use the CIA website to complete the chart.

1.  Give the correct absolute location of each country beside it.  Always use the coordinates of the capital city of each country for my assignments.  Observe the shape of each country thoroughly and record what it reminds you of.  Try to enlarge the map so that you can see the details well.

For extra credit, write the correct capital city of each country in the right margin (20 points).

Sixth Grade:  Workbook: Reading Study Guide: Chapter 10, pages 86 and 87, all: Terms and Names and Main Ideas.  Evaluate yourself before I do; make sure all your answers are correct.  You may verify your answers with your textbook.

Extra credit: "Thinking Critically:" Answer each question completely in eight lines or more on a separate piece of paper.  Each question that is addressed completely and correctly is worth ten (10) extra points.  Remember to write your name, the title of the assignment, the words "Extra credit," the date, and your name on the piece of extra-credit paper.

Progressing on His/Herstory

We are progressing on our presentations on history and herstory.  Some of the students are really going above expectations and are throwing in the razzle dazzle factor!  Some classes are ahead of others.  Friday is our targeted day to finish.

One Pager Due Next Tuesday (10/20/08)

Self-Reflection/Evaluation Essay:

Examine your performance in social studies during the first nine-week grading period (August 11, 2008 to October 10, 2008) and write a one-page (one pager) reflective essay in response to the following questions.

1.  How would you rate your performance in terms of motivation, completion of assignments, submission of assignments, compliance to due dates, and overall achievement of goals?  Please be clear in your response.  You can use your own rating scale, but please, explain what your rating scale means.  If your parent and/or teacher had to make you do your work and/or turn in your work, you should rate yourself low on the submission and completion rating scales.  If your parent and/or teacher did not have to make you do your work, you should rate yourself high on motivation. If you have turned in all assignments when they were due (and did not ask for extensions or have your parents ask for extensions), you should rate yourself high on compliance with due dates.

2.  What are your goals for social studies for this second nine-week grading period?  Be clear in your statements.  Make sure your goals are attainable/achievable/realistic.

The Peer Evaluation sheet for Column 3 presentations is due on Monday.  Make all corrections, add more details, and do what is necessary to earn you an excellent grade.  In order  words, as we discussed in class today, evaluate yourself before I evaluate you.

Thursday: Presentations begin tomorrow for "History or Herstory!"  Download the rubric here (for both 6th and 7th grades) if you have lost yours.  It explains the expectations and requirements for the assignment.  If your number falls between 1 and 5, be prepared to present tomorrow. 

Also, we will try to squeeze in the last part of "Word Splash" this week between Thursday and Friday.

Friday: We might squeeze in only three presenters on Friday.  Therefore, Numbers 6 to 8, be prepared.  As is true in life, all plans are tentative and may change.

Welcome to the Second Nine-Week Grading Period!

Today begins the first day of our second nine-week grading period. 

Kick off: "History or Herstory: Tell It Your Way!"

Each student has received a strip of paper that contains the topics we are discovering as we try to make history or herstory come alive. 

Homework tonight: Locate your topic in the textbook and/or Online.  Read it, record 10 important facts to share with the class in an unusually dramatic way.  Who do you want to be/impersonate?  Are you sharing your facts as history or as herstory!  Presentations begin on Wednesday!  Whoever chose #1 on the strip is our first presenter, and we will progress until the last person has enacted history or herstory.
