Parents and students,

Thank you for an incredibly fabulous year!  Your kindness and generosity warmed my heart throughout the year.  Your timely response to our economic trading activities, cultural celebrations, and daily needs of classroom supplies have been simply amazing.

Thank you for the opportunity to get to know and to teach your wonderful and talented children.  This year has been incredibly enriching for me.  Words are insufficient in expressing my boundless gratitude to you.  I will suffice it with a siimple "Thank you for your kind hearts!"

Please enjoy your summer!  Stay safe, students!  Read a lot of books and have a lot of fun!  Thanks for all the laughter and jokes.  You made this difficult job a whole lot easier.  Thanks so much!

Love,

Ms. Ohanenye

End-of-Year Exam Postponed

Due to the effects of events in the school's (Tapp's) calendar, our end-of-year exam (E.Y.E.) has been moved toward the end of this week.

Sixth Grade: End of year exam begins on Wednesday and ends on Thursday, if necessary.

Seventh Grade: Due to the 7th grade award ceremony tomorrow, 1st period will not meet.  Therefore, the end-of-year exam will be administered on Thursday and ends on Friday, if necessary.  The same applies to 2nd period if the award ceremony runs into second period.

Study your E.Y.E. review chart and your warm up calendar.  Both of these resources contain all the questions on your final exam.

GOODLUCK!

HW for 7th Grade: Cultural Celebration or Economic System Trading

All seventh grade students in advanced content social studies have the following assignments depending on their class period (if they have not finished the assignment in the last two weeks).  All assignments are due on Monday (5/11/09).

First Period: Prepare for the cultural celebration for the country you pre-selected by engaging in the following:

1. Turn in your elaborate product: Powerpoint product (on flash or sent to me through e-mail before 9 P.M. on Sunday),  posterboard, brochure, or any other elaborate method used to answer each of the questions on your "Cultural Celebration" rubric.  (You have had two weeks to work on this.)

2.  Bring in a sample of the type of food eaten in your country, enough for the people in your class period.

3. Share some words from your country's main language as we mingle and converse in celebration of world cultures.

Second Period: Bring in the correct  number and type of items to trade under each of the three economic systems we have studied this year: Traditional, command, and market.  You will be graded on your ability to apply the concepts you have learned this year.  Go through the instruction sheet titled "Setting Up to Trade" that was given to you over two weeks ago.  We have discussed all aspects of the activity, and you have had ample time to ask questions and to work on it.

Also, bring in (mint) only ten percent of your country's per capita income divided by 12 months.  The teacher provided you with this amount earlier in the week.  If you need more information, please visit the CIA website.

See the calendar under yesterday's blog entry for the due dates of all other assignments including your South and East Asia end-of-unit test on 5/12/09.

Have a wonderful weekend, and be nicer to your mothers!

For research on cultural attributes: fashion, food, people/ethnic groups, language, tradition, and music, these websites are helpful as well as the links on the blog entry of last Thursday (4/30/09).  However, you can use other appropriate sites.

http://cvl.cobbk12.org/ (This is the Cobb County Virtual Library).

User name: Cobbms; password: flower

This is time-sensitive information and may have expired.

www.cia.gov (Select worldbook and choose the country you picked on.)

Food ideas: 1.  The Cobb International Farmer's Market on Spring Road in Smyrna is better stocked with international goods.

2.  Harry's Farmer's Market by the Big Chicken carries international food items.

3.  The World Market in Smyrna in the TJ Maxx & More Shopping Center carries a wide variety of international food items as well.

4.  There are international stores hidden here and there in Marietta, Smyrna, Powder Springs, Mableton, and Austell.

5.  For those who want to make a field trip out of the Cultural Celebration, Buford Highway Flea Market is (really no longer a flea market) stocked with international foods, more of an international market.

6.  Also, the Little Five Points in downtown Atlanta has some international shops.  I can not vouch for the accuracy of this second-hand information as I have not been there recently.  However, I have been to the Municipal Market downtown several times.  They carry a variety of food items.

I look forward to seeing the students dressed up (optional) and speaking the languages (counting one to ten and using salutation words) of the countries they chose!

Homework: Trading and Cultural Celebration (6th Grade)

ACTIVITY FOR TONIGHT: USE THE SAME COUNTRY FOR TRADING AND CULTURAL CELEBRATION WHEN IT IS YOUR CLASS PERIOD'S TURN TO DO EITHER.

TRADING--Gather the natural items you would like to exchange during our traditional trading period from your "backyard garden" or from "the farm behind your house."  Remember to bring the following:

1.  The equivalent of one month's income as determined by your country's per capital income.  Remember the computation: Determine your country's per capital income, find 10% or that amount, and divide it by 12 (months) to find out how much you can bring to the traditional trading period.  Do not bring more than the required amount.  Otherwise, the International Monetary Fund and/or the World Bank will seize the money.

2.  All those who earned money during the military regime, you can bring the money you earned when you were in power.  However, you must declare how much you earned during your military regime.  Otherwise, the International Monetary Fund and/or the World Bank will seize the money and leave you with only your country's per capital income (see #1 above).

3.  Other goods and services to exchange during the command and market economic systems.  Follow the instructions on the attached handout.  Download SETTING UP TO TRADE 042909

CULTURAL CELEBRATION:

Bring a sample of a dish famous in your chosen country as we celebrate the cultures of the countries we have been studying since this semester.  If you need anything refrigerated, please bring it to my room.  I hope you did the research to gather information on your country to use during the cultural discussions as we share other cultural attributes.  Your cultural celebration project is due on Thursday--giving you enough time to assemble the aspects of the culture into a technology product (Powerpoint, Photostory, etc.) or posterboard or brochure as specified on your rubric.
